Dear San Miguel Fire District Board of Directors, As a resident of this Fire District, I am concerned with the manner in which my Fire District is being operated. It has come to my attention that Chief Ghio, with your support, has placed a fire engine and its nine firefighters out of service due to proposed reductions in funding. Meanwhile, with Board of Director approval, he continues to fund an expensive Public Education Bureau. Along with this, he has increased staffing to assist the Public Information Officer. Your prioritization of Public Education and Information over response to emergencies in my neighborhood is in direct opposition to the priorities I listed in a survey my Fire District sent me just this Spring. While I believe in Public Education, I do not feel it can be placed before ensuring we have enough professional firefighters and paramedics responding to emergencies. As an active voter and concerned citizen of this Fire District, I take stock of the decisions and actions made by my elected officials. In these tough financial times, I expect your highest priority to be the mitigation of emergencies as they occur by real firefighters responding quickly on fire engines. Let Public Education support this mission when the funds return, but make sure you can help my neighbors and I right now when we call upon our Firefighters!
